Gulf Coast R&R in
Biloxi Must Rebuild
SEPT. 5, 2005
The
Mississippi Low Income Child
Care Initiative and Gulf Coast Child Care Resource and
Referral Agency appear to have suffered extensive damage to their
headquarters at Biloxi.
Executive Director Carol Burnett reported to supporters yesterday,
“We have reports that Moore Community House’s facilities were
ravaged by flood waters, but some structure remains. A neighboring
home was lifted from its foundation and washed onto our doorstep. We
have heard from eleven of our thirty-four employees and they are all
safe, though several of us have lost our homes.”
“We need your help to rebuild and re-open so we can help our
community with the long-term recovery process,” she added.
Moore Community House was home to the Mississippi Low Income Child
Care Initiative and the Gulf Coast Child Care Resource and Referral
Agency. Moore Community House’s neighborhood is made up of poor and
low-income families who will need assistance as they begin to put
their lives back together. Burnett commented, “It is likely to be a
while before we can return to daily early childhood services, but we
will now focus on the more immediate work of hurricane recovery.”
The Southern Regional Office of the Children’s Defense Fund, located
in Jackson, is accepting donations for rebuilding Moore Community
House. Mail contributions to: Moore Community House, c/o Children’s
