New Manuals of Fine Motor, Gross Motor
Activities for Young Children Available Online
AUG. 20, 2007 | Three new guides from the
Mississippi State University Early
Childhood Institute will help early childhood teachers
and caregivers plan more physical activities for young children.

The guides each contain dozens of fine motor and gross motor
activities, with onevolume on activities for infants and
toddlers, one for preschoolers, and one for school-age children.
The volume for preschool children has the added feature of
indicating specific competencies and objectives in the
Mississippi Early Learning Guidelines that can be met with each
activity.
The books can be downloaded
here.
Stacy A. Callender, M.A.,
is the author of the three-volume
Gross and Fine Motor
Activities for Early Childhood Series.
Lynn Bell designed,
illustrated, and produced the series.
The institute published the guides with funding from the Office
for Children and Youth of the Mississippi Department of Human
Services, as part of a project to restore child care services in
the Hurricane Katrina region of Mississippi. Eligible child care
centers will receive free sets of the three guides.
Julia Todd, director of the Office for Children and Youth,
commented, “In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, it is crucial
that children
have the greatest opportunities possible to learn and grow in
safe, supportive, age-appropriate settings. The activities in
this three-volume series are based on clear and powerful
evidence of the importance of physical activities and play to
young children’s overall development. They support best
practices in using the toys and learning materials that MDHS has
provided to eligible child care providers.”
