Summer Workshops for Leflore, Sunflower Counties Will Cover New Curriculum for Three-Year-Olds

JUNE 18, 2007│ The Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute (ECI) will hold two three-day workshops in August for early childhood teachers and directors in the Mississippi Delta.

The workshops will cover how to use a new curriculum, rich in literacy-based, hands-on activities for young children, that is based upon the official Mississippi Early Learning Guidelines for Three-year-olds.

The Mississippi Department of Human Services awarded a $63,300 contract, from federal Social Services Block Grant funds, to ECI to provide the training to teachers of three-year-olds in Leflore and Sunflower Counties.

Eligible teachers and early childhood center directors will receive free registration to the workshops, reimbursement for travel expenses, and curriculum and classroom materials worth several hundred dollars. Call 662-325-7065 to request a registration form. The deadline for registration is July 20.

The workshops will take place Aug. 2-4 and Aug. 16-18, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, on the campus of Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, Mississippi.

ECI is the publisher of Using the Mississippi Early Learning Guidelines: A Complete Curriculum for Three-year-olds by Lynn Darling, Ph.D.

The first three chapters, including a thematic unit, “All About Me,” for the month of August, are downloadable here. ECI will publish additional units online in the coming months.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation provided funding for development of the curriculum as part of a $1.25 million grant for recovery of the early care and education sector in the Hurricane Katrina disaster region.
