New
Curriculum to Help Teachers Use Mississippi Early Learning
Guidelines
JUNE 11, 2007│A
new curriculum rich in literacy-based, hands-on activities for
young children will help teachers follow the official
Mississippi Early Learning Guidelines.
The Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute (ECI)
is the publisher of Using the Mississippi Early Learning
Guidelines: A Complete Curriculum for Three-year-olds by
Lynn Darling, Ph.D.
The first three chapters, including a thematic unit, “All About
Me,” for the month of August, are downloadable
here. ECI will
publish additional units online in the coming months.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation provided funding for
development of the curriculum as part of a $1.25 million grant
for recovery of the early care and education sector in the
Hurricane Katrina disaster region.
Cathy Grace, Ed.D., professor and director of ECI, announced
publication of the curriculum today:
“Dr. Lynn Darling has compiled a wonderful set of activities for
early childhood teachers. The activities are parts of twelve
one-month thematic units, with weekly schedules and ideas for
indoor and outdoor learning and play. The book also contains a
section, ‘Understanding the Mississippi Early Learning
Guidelines,’ that walks the teacher and caregiver through the
state’s learning goals for three-year-olds. We have included a
reproducible Checklist of Learning Objectives that teachers and
caregivers can use to record when individual children meet
specific objectives.”
Lynn Bell of ECI designed and produced the curriculum.
ECI will offer workshops on using the curriculum for teachers
and caregivers in the Katrina region on June 16 and 23 and July
7 and 28.
