Scrapbook: Petal, Mississippi, Celebrates Earning Excel by Five Community Status

MAY 10, 2007 | The city of Petal, Miss., celebrated its designation as the first “Excel by Five” community in the nation with a day of games, speeches, and even a flag-bearing skydiver.

Petal is one of four Mississippi communities participating in the pilot phase of the Excel by Five Initiative, a program of the Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute which was established and funded by Chevron and the Phil Hardin Foundation of Meridian, Miss.

“This is what we have been working on for the past two years,” Nadine Coleman said before the March 31 celebration. Coleman is executive director of Petal’s Excel by Five initiative. Annjo Lemons of ECI has directed the pilot project since 2005.
