Celebrates Earning Excel by Five Community Status

| The city of Petal, Miss., celebrated its designation as the
first “Excel by Five” community in the nation with a day of
games, speeches, and even a flag-bearing skydiver.
Petal is one of four Mississippi communities participating in
the pilot phase of the
Excel by Five Initiative, a program of the Mississippi
State University Early Childhood Institute which was established
and funded by Chevron and the Phil Hardin Foundation of
Meridian, Miss.
“This is what we have been working on for the past two years,”
Nadine Coleman said before the March 31 celebration. Coleman is
executive director of Petal’s Excel by Five initiative. Annjo
Lemons of ECI has directed the pilot project since 2005.
