Workshop Materials for American Indian,
Alaska Native Early Learning Now Available
MARCH 19, 2007│ Two workshop guides to encourage the
use of Native languages and traditions in early childhood
education are now available
online.
One guide, “Leadership for Native Language Learning,” supports
planning sessions by community or tribal leaders to strengthen
early childhood care and education in Native communities.
The other guide, “Using Native Languages and Traditions in
Everyday Activities,” contains lesson plans and teaching
materials for training teachers and caregivers.
The Tribal Child Care Training and Technical Assistance
Center (TriTAC), part of the federal Child Care Bureau,
commissioned development of the workshops by the
National
Center for Rural Early Childhood Learning Initiatives.
The center, known as Rural Early Childhood, is an initiative of
the Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute.
Cathy Grace, Ed.D., and
Nicole L. Thompson, Ph.D.
(Menominee/Mohican), wrote the workshop guides. Tracie Sempier,
M.S., contributed to the “Everyday Activities” guide.
