Petal, Mississippi, Earns Excel by Five Designation from Unique Community Certification Program

MARCH 14, 2007│ A program assisted by the Mississippi State University Early Childhood Institute has designated the community of Petal, Miss., an “Excel by Five” community for its efforts to improve services to young children and their families.

Petal is one of four communities participating in the pilot phase of the Excel by Five program, which was established and funded by Chevron and the Phil Hardin Foundation of Meridian, Miss.

“This is what we have been working on for the past two years,” Nadine Coleman said recently. Coleman is executive director of Petal’s Excel by Five initiative. Annjo Lemons of ECI has directed the pilot project since 2005.

The community will celebrate its accomplishment with various public events Sat., March 31.
