Rebuilding After Katrina

Rebuilding After Katrina: The Mississippi Early Care and Education Infrastructure Initiative is funded through The W. K. Kellogg Foundation to support efforts to rebuild the early care and education infrastructure in Mississippi in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The project is currently working to provide developmentally appropriate books and learning materials to early childhood program directors and staff through EMBRACE Mississippi's Children, a nationwide interagency drive. The project will enhance existing technical assistance programs: the Partners for Quality Child Care program for licensed child care centers and the Nurturing Homes program through a partnership with the School of Human Sciences at MSU for licensed and unlicensed family child care homes. The project will work to strengthen the Northeast Mississippi Early Care and Education Resource and Referral Network (R&R) and assist in the development of the Gulf Coast Mississippi Resource and Referral Agency through a partnership with the Low Income Child Care Initiative. Long term outcomes include working with the MS Department of Health to develop an emergency preparedness plan for early childhood staff and parents in Mississippi. A course of study for early care and education providers to address the social and emotional needs of children will also be produced with the MS Department of Mental Health and national early childhood mental health professionals.
